Aromatherapy:
I love using essential oils and I've purchased several by Aura Acacia, which I first discovered at Whole Foods. I use lavender oil for relaxation, usually applied to my wrists or my neck. If I'm feeling both overwhelmed and tired, I will use rosemary oil on the soles of my feet for an energy boost. Be aware if you're applying essential oils to the skin, it is typically recommended to first apply a carrier oil such as coconut oil, olive oil, or castor oil. My favorite lavender oil is available from Amazon at this link. I never purchase products that use the word "fragrance" in the ingredient list. I only use high-quality pure essential oils.
Now that you've got your essential oils on hand you can enjoy creating a calming atmosphere at home with an essential oil diffuser. What I love about
this model is the various color features. Using warm color light set lower to the floor is great for supporting circadian rhythm in the evening. You can try this as part of your new bedtime routine. This diffuser has an auto-off feature and multiple timer settings, and is available from Amazon at this link.
Organic Herbal Tea:
Pause for a moment and relax with a cup of herbal tea for stress relief. Keep a stash at work to avoid reaching for more caffeine in times of overwhelm.
Here are a few stress relief tea options to consider:
Journals:
Allow yourself a few minutes at the start or end of your day by writing in a gratitude journal or reflecting on self-care needs. Figure out what time of day is the most beneficial for your routine and schedule.
Releasing Physical Tension
Stretching and yoga are a great way to release tension. I find that if I'm physically tense, I can become mentally tense. In those times I even forget to breathe more deeply, and our breath is another tool to remain calm and focused. If you are new to yoga this beginner video is a great place to start. You can find many options on YouTube as well. One of my favorite channels for at-home yoga practice is Yoga with Adriene.
Another favorite way to start my day is with something called Five Minute Flow. It isn't yoga, but rather involves five minutes of moving and stretching, especially circling the joints, followed by hydration. I enjoy adding in some gentle twists. You can learn more about it and watch an example here. Sometimes I'll do this for a couple of minutes after sitting at the desk for a while.
A great way to unwind at the end of the day is to soak away the day's worries with baths. You can add epsom salt or magnesium to help release physical tension.
Books
With your essential oil diffuser filling the air with the scent of calming lavender and a cup of soothing tea in hand, it's time to grab a good book. Even if just for 10-15 minutes, reading can help you unwind. It certainly helps me fall asleep! Think of whether you want to read something educational, inspiring, or purely entertaining. Add some mental floss to your day. My favorite time to read is at night to reduce screen time. Here are a few books you can look at adding to your reading list:
Music
For the resource mentioned in the guidebook check out brain.fm for science-based music that can help with relaxation, focused or creative work, and sleep.
Other artists I enjoy on platforms like Spotify are:
*Album: Cosmic Chants for 7 Chakras. These chants will be sure to get you into a relaxed state.
*Artist: Environments - These soundtracks are lovely nature-based recordings to help promote relaxation.
*Artist: Chakra Balancing Sound Therapy. Their Chakra Balancing album includes dreamy spa-like music.
*Artist: Wolfgang Ohmer. Enjoy the soothing sounds of hand pan drum music.
I hope you'll find the resources above helpful in your journey to a life of less stress and more peace in your days.
